Episode 130: Memorial Day Doorscape

My family is very patriotic.  We have relatives on both mine and my husband's sides of the family that have served in the military.  My husband did for a time as well.  I want to say "Thank You" to all the men and women who have given their lives for this great country of ours.  Our freedom is not free.

In honor of all those Americans, I dedicate this Memorial Day Doorscape to them.

On each decoration is a couple of lines from the poem

"Memorial Day" by C.W. Johnson

We walked among the crosses
Where our fallen soldiers lay.
And listened to the bugle
As TAPS began to play.
The Chaplin led a prayer
We stood with heads bowed low.
And I thought of fallen comrades
I had known so long ago.
They came from every city
Across this fertile land.
That we might live in freedom.
They lie here 'neath the sand.
I felt a little guilty
My sacrifice was small.
I only lost a little time
But these men lost their all.
Now the services are over
For this Memorial Day.
To the names upon these crosses
I just want to say,
Thanks for what you've given
No one could ask for more.
May you rest with God in heaven
From now through evermore.

Episode 129: Crepe Paper Ruffles

Did you know you can ruffle crepe paper?  I didn't until my friend Heather told me she had done it for a baby shower and that it was easy.  So, I googled it.  I guess I've been living under a rock and unaware of this technique.  But, NO more!  I decided my Memorial Day doorscape was the perfect time to try this ruffle out.  So, I went to my trusty Hobby Lobby and purchased some patriotic crepe paper (at least that's what I call it, but the package says crepe streamer).  I found it on the party decor aisle with the patriotic stuff.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

Sewing Machine
White Thread
Patriotic Crepe Paper
Scissors

Now here was the only tricky part to this mini project--getting the tension right on my sewing machine. I have a basic Singer Sew Mate sewing machine.  I bought it for my daughter.  It sat around unused, so now I guess it's mine.  Anyway...check out the settings that I used to make the ruffles:

Here we go:

Now, take a look at the video.  Yep, I goofed in the beginning, but it turned out great in the end. Persevere crafters!

I'm really excited about the finished ruffles and can't wait to add them to my decorations!  A lot of people sew two streamers together and ruffle them at the same time.

Episode 97: Memorial Day Doorscape

Happy Memorial Day!

Did you know that Memorial Day was once called Decoration Day...referring to the decoration of the  graves of soldiers that gave their lives for our country?

It is an honor for me to be able to acknowledge the sacrifices of so many by decorating my door in remembrance this Memorial Day.  My family and I have the highest regard for our nation's military.  Thank you!
Here is my video:

I used 21" red, white and blue deco mesh; red deco mesh ribbon; yellow satin ribbon, blue sparkly picks, and lots of American flags.  I bought the floral containers (in place of wreaths on the door) at Hobby Lobby.  I placed some floral styrofoam in them and poked all the American flags in the styrofoam.  I found the "Honor and Remember" banners at Lowe's.  Here are the pics:

And here is my kitchen island:

From my family to yours, Happy Memorial Day.  And God bless the USA!
